This is an excursion through the Bavarian Alps and will include Obersalzberg in the Berchtesgadener Land, located in the southernmost tip of Bavaria, and a visit by elevator to the famous Eagle’s Nest (Kehlsteinhaus).
Obersalzberg is a mountainside retreat situated above the market town of Berchtesgaden in Bavaria and home to Hitler’s mountain residences the Berghof and the Kehlsteinhaus (Eagle’s Nest.).
The Eagle’s Nest is a chalet-style structure erected on a sub-peak of the Hoher Göll known as the Kehlstein. Hence the name Kehlsteinhaus (1834m). It was built as an extension of the Berghof complex and intended to be a 50th birthday present for Adolf Hitler to serve as a retreat and a place for him to entertain visiting dignitaries.
The last 124 metres up to the Kehlsteinhaus are reached by an elevator bored straight down through the mountain and linked via a tunnel through the granite below. The inside of the large elevator car is surfaced with polished brass, Venetian mirrors and green leather.
